Why You Feel Super Sleepy after Having Meals

Dr. Amar Amale    08-03-2019 Consult

Here are 5 common reasons for feeling sleepy after having a meal -

1.EXCESSIVE SECRETION OF INSULIN

During excessive insulin secretion in our body, tryptophan moves to the brain and here it gets metabolised into serotonin and melatonin which are neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters have a calm effect which helps you to relax and sleep. You should choose natural foods which are high in fibre and protein.

2.EATING PROCESSED FOODS

If you notice carefully, you will realise that eating processed foods can make you feel very heavy and sleepy. While it is kind of normal to feel heavy after eating food, if you feel overly heavy then think back at what you ate. It could be due to the high levels of sugar and refined carbohydrates, these foods results in low energy and you will be sleepy!

3.FOOD ALLERGIES & INTOLERANCE

If you have food allergies or what we also call as intolerances then this will definitely be associated with your digestive problems and hence you will experience bloating, flatulence, constipation or even diarrhoea. Remove foods that pose as a threat to you, if you cannot bear certain foods as they lead to allergies then skip them and see how you do.

4.FATTY MEALS

Now if you gorged on a big piece of steak and finished it with a very creamy desert then what do you expect. Fatty foods are hard to digest, and your body requires more amount of blood in the digestive system. So, the blood gets drained away from your brain and this makes your sleepy.

5.INEFFECTIVE BREATHING

This is especially true for obese people who overeat and at the same time breathe in an ineffective way.  The solution to this problem is reduced breathing so that you can prevent being hungry and eating fats and complex carbohydrates. Every time an obese person eats complex carbohydrates or fats, the oxygen levels in the body tend to become worse. This induces sleep.
